7 Must-Take-Action Items In Preparation for Hurricane Dorian

by Arthur Martens Group 08/30/2019

Hurricane

Thanks to an email from one of our preferred insurance companies, here is priceless advice for our clients, friends, and homeowners.

As of the time of writing this on Friday August 30, 2018, Hurricane Dorian appears to be projected to make landfall by Tuesday as a Category 4, with possible flooding even before, not to mention during and after.

In light of the above, take note of the following checklist to insure you are fully prepared!

1) STORE YOUR DOCUMENTS: Know where your most valuable document are ie. insurance policies. If your policies are in paper format, it is recommend you store the policy book in a water proof container. If you have your policies in electronic format like on a flash drive please place this where you can easily access it. You may also choose to email the documents to yourself to allow easy access following the storm.

2) PHOTOS AND FILM: Spend a few minutes to take time-stamped photos and/or video of your property NOW! This will help the claims process in the aftermath of the storm working with adjusters.

3) PREPARE THE EXTERIOR OF YOUR HOME: Have a plan to reduce any potential damage by removing outdoor items into the garage or storage area.

4) SCHEDULE CLEAN UP VENDORS NOW: Call your landscaping crew, Electrician, AC repair vendors, etc. now to be sure to be on their list after the storm. REMEBER: Hire only licensed and insured contractors.

5) FOR CLIENTS IN AN ASSOCIATION: We suggest establishing a line of credit to ensure the availability of funds after a storm.

6) REPAIRS AFTER THE STORM: Take AFTER photos before any repairs are made. Take the same or similiar angles to what you took BEFORE the storm. Keep receipts! (Please don’t sign any papers that say “Assignment of Benefits”). Hire only licensed and insured vendors.  Call Steven or I with questions or concerns regarding your home or property.

7) DETERMINE NEAREST BACKUP POWER SOURCE: If you or someone you know, relies on power for medical reasons (like I do), be sure to have a stable backup power source or know where you will go in an event of a power loss. This also applies for pregnant mothers, families with small children, or the elderly. Work together with those you know who may have generators to assist those who may need help.

REPORTING CLAIMS:

If you sustain any damage, please take steps to prevent any further damage, take pictures, keep damaged items, keep receipts of any work or replacement items and hire only licensed & insured vendors (i.e. contractors, roofers, restoration companies, etc.). If you need to contact your insuranc agent for any reason, don't hestitate!

Thank you again to Connor Lynch from Plastridge Insurance for your email which is now helping even more homeowners be prepared! Should find yourself in need an agent that cares and will provide and excellent customer experience for your residential or business needs, we highly reccomend you call their office at 561-276-5221. They have full backup at their main off so will be reachable even if the main power is off.
